‘The Den’ at Old Blue Last

Last night, Frisco launched ‘The Den’, which is a new grime night that could be held on a monthly basis. The venue  was small and intimate, as it was at the Old Blue Last, upstairs.

The performances began at 10pm starting with Smila & Frisco, which got the crowd buzzing. Then Shakka came on after to get the crowd even more hype.

Skepta joined the stage straight after to perform ‘It’s Not Safe’, and literally at that point, the mosh pit, yeah it was not safe at all! I can’t even lie, I even joined in myself, it was too good, I had been waiting to hear Skepta perform the single live as well, as I never caught it at Eskimo Dance.

Jammer & Discarda came on to perform, with Frisco joining them as well as Skepta, as they were all on stage performing individually, as well as together.

It was hard to get proper clear pictures, as the crowd was jumping up & down all night, including me of course!

Just before 11pm Frisco brought out Stush to perform her single, which featured him too. She had the crowd cheering!

At 11pm  Shorty v Skepta the clash begins! This was actually too hilarious, me being a big football fan myself, I really enjoyed the banter and clearly everyone else in the room did, as everyone was laughing out loud and cheering. This was a nice touch to the event.

Later it was seen that Logan Sama was running late, as he was performing at Boiler Room that night as well, however this did not phase Frisco, as he kept the night going regardless. He let Maximum cut to the music to keep the night flowing. That was very well handled.

The event was purely good vibes, with a chilled atmosphere, as everyone’s attire clearly showed, until the performances began of course! Then it went manic, but a good manic!

Cheap drinks & cheap entry, what more could you ask for? Frisco definitely did a good job with everything, there are no criticisms.

The only thing I would say is that I feel the venue should be bigger next time, as there is clearly a big audience this event appeals to, therefore a bigger venue would be just what this event needs. However I understood the intimate venue aspect of it, I think it did fit in well with the launch for the event. It almost reminded me of back in the days when everyone had their Grime clashes & performances in the underground type venues.

Overall very pleased with the night. I will be so happy if this was a consistent monthly based event, as this is something that was missing in the scene. To be honest I felt I enjoyed the Den way more than Eskimo Dance, as I felt Eskimo Dance lost it’s touch when it became too organised. Last night The Den was not organised as each MC came on stage to perform individually but they also performed alongside each other then they had a clash as well, including freestyles. This shows it was not organised one by one, everyone just joined together as Grime should not be organised, it should flow naturally, and big up to Frisco for clearly demonstrating that. Well done!
